Barndominiums & Retreats
Steel-framed homes designed from scratch. Living space and shop under one roof.
What a barndominium is
A home built on a steel-framed metal building. It usually does double duty: living space on one side, shop or workspace on the other. They are common on Texas ranches and in equestrian communities, and they routinely include things a conventional house does not — oversized roll-up doors, and a single enclosed space big enough for a boat or an RV.
Rhodes builds these the same way we build a commercial project: we design it, pour the foundation, put up the steel and finish the inside.
A custom home versus a truly custom home
Most builders offer three floor plans and a firm price the same day. You pick colors, countertops and finishes, and the result is a nice house that looks exactly like the neighbor’s.
That is not what we do. We start from your ideas and your budget, from scratch. You will not walk into two Rhodes homes that are the same. It takes longer, and it takes some work from you as well as from us.
What steel lets you do
A clear-span frame carries the roof without interior columns, so rooms can be laid out around how you actually live instead of around structure. One client collects antique jukeboxes, so we built a 5,000 square foot room to display them. He later asked us to build another 5,000 square feet for a growing automobile collection.
We also brought fifty years of commercial detailing into residential work, which shows up mostly in things you notice later: exterior details chosen to cut long-term maintenance rather than just to look good on the day it is finished.
You were the only people we talked with who were willing to take the project from start to finish. We have been nothing but satisfied.

Common questions
What is a barndominium?
A home built on a steel-framed metal building, usually doing double duty: living space on one side, shop or workspace on the other.
Does Rhodes build the whole thing, including the inside?
Yes. We design it, pour the foundation, put up the steel and finish the interior.
Do you have floor plans to choose from?
No, and that is deliberate. We start from your ideas and your budget. You will not walk into two Rhodes homes that are the same.
Can a barndominium have a shop big enough for an RV or a boat?
Yes — oversized roll-up doors and a single clear-span space are among the main reasons people build this way.
