About this project

This 34′ × 46′ custom garage and game room was especially interesting from a design and fabrication standpoint. The main building features a 6:12 roof pitch, while the porch rooflines transition to a 2:12 pitch, with 2-foot roof overhangs on 2½ sides.

The goal was to create a clean, continuous roofline without exposed rafters or bulky connections. To accomplish this, the porch framing uses flush-mounted purlins for a fully soffited finish and 6″ × 8″ tube columns with concealed bolted connections. The result is a clean appearance with no exposed connection hardware.

The front and rear required two different framing solutions. The 10-foot front porch stops short rather than extending the full length of the building — which is why the overhang runs 2½ sides rather than three — while the 8-foot rear porch required its own unique framing to maintain the seamless roof transition. A center wind bent was also incorporated into the structural design.

The building was insulated with a 9-inch Simple Saver roof system and 3-inch wall insulation, with additional batt insulation incorporated into the finished interior walls. The shop area was finished with full metal liner panel to the eave line, providing a clean, durable interior finish.

This was a challenging but rewarding project from both the design and fabrication sides — the kind of building where much of the work is in the details you don’t see when it’s finished.
